The book Prophet by S. Andrew Swann is one of the best science fiction books I have ever read. It combined the beauty of some of the classic science fiction from my childhood, Star Wars, Star Trek, and many other movies and books. It also calls to mind some of the science fiction that I have greatly enjoyed recently, such as the Mass Effect trilogy, and Avatar by James Cameron. It also folds in a religious aspect into the story.
Prophet takes place many years in the future, where the universe has been populated by people and genetically engineered animals, remnants from a long ago war, and divided among various corporations. The book focuses on a scientific expedition to a star system known as Xi Virginis. The book has many surprising twists and is full of interesting worlds and characters, including artificial intellegences, nanotechnology, the aforementioned genetically engineered animals, priests, and a threat to the universe as a whole.
Mr. Swann opens the book with quotes, that get you ready for an interesting and thoughtful read. He brings into play artificial intelligences and nanotechnology in a seamless, artful way that seems almost like poetry, and creates characters that are extremely like able and are full of emotion and life. He creates worlds that you can almost see, touch smell and hear and creates beautiful, breathtaking vistas with his words. Mr. Swann also creates realistic societies and social circles, along with their undercurrents and ideas, and creates an extremely believable science fiction epic of a breathtaking level of depth and beauty.
Mr. Swann is truly a weaver of words and a teller of tales, simply put this story is delightful, and an amazing read. If you love science fiction, this book is for you.
